When applying for a job, Most companies require you send in a cover letter alongside your resume explaining why you are the best fit for the role. A cover letter is as important as a resume in the job application process. 26% of recruiters consider cover letters important in their decision to hire an applicant. A well thought and strategically written cover letter might just be the secret weapon needed to clinch that dream job. A Cover letter allows you to:

  1. Introduce yourself to the employer: This allows you to answer the question “who are you’ before a face to face interview and tell your career journey story. Your personal brand should stand out in the cover letter. 
  2. Demonstrate your interest in the vacancy and company: An ideal cover letter should be specific to the role and employer in such a unique way that it piques the recruiters’ interest to go through the resume for detailed skills, qualifications, and experience. Mention specific elements about the role that makes it attractive to you and why you want to work for the company
  3. Showcase why you are the perfect fit for the role: Before Writing or editing the cover letter, read the job description and understand the desired qualification as it will help you figure out why you are fit for the role. Use your unique qualities and skills to sell your personal brand showcasing that you are best suited for the role.
  4. Complement your CV:  A cover letter accompanies the CV so it can be used to elaborate on certain aspects of the CV such as explain an employment gap, belabor on your skillset if you have limited number of work experience, or even explain reasons for a career change. 

A cover letter typically consists of 3 parts:

  1. Introduction which forms the first paragraph. Aim to capture the recruiters’ interest by how you introduce yourself and identify the position you are applying for. Remember to indicate how you heard about the vacancy.
  2. The Body: This forms the second paragraph. State what attracted you to apply for the role. Spice things up by stating what unique skills and experience you will be bringing to the company. Approach the body an opportunity to showcase the winning elevator pitch
  3. The Conclusion:  In the third and final paragraph, notify the recruiter of your availability to be interviewed. Thank the recruiter for expressing enthusiasm to get a positive response.
